Like so many F1 drivers, Jos Verstappen began his career in karting, going on to win the German F3 title in 1993. This brought him to the attention of F1 bosses and he was signed by Benetton as reserve and test driver for 1994...
Injury to the team's no. 2, JJ Lehto, in pre-season testing found Verstappen driving for the team in the first race of 1994, Interlagos, partnering Michael Schumacher. His debut race ended in a shunt from Jordan's Eddie Irvine, but he finished third in Hungary, making the podium for the first time. He repeated this at Spa, but Benetton released him at the end of the year.
Verstappen moved to Simtek for 1995 but that team folded before the season ended, and he returned with the Arrows/Footwork outfit the following season. He managed only 1 point that year and none the next with Tyrell. His move to Stewart was equally brief and unrewarding, and Verstappen was replaced by Johnny Herbert for 1999.
Re-signing for Arrows in 2000 looked like a good move, but two years there yielded just 6 points and Verstappen was replaced by Frentzen at the start of the 2002 season. After a year out, he was taken on by Minardi in 2003, but it was another disappointing campaign, and Verstappen retired at the end of it.
